Accounting students debate their way to award at tax competition

17 Jun, 2015
A team of four HKBU BBA Accounting Year 3 students was awarded 2nd runner up in the Tax Debate Competition organised by the Taxation Institute of Hong Kong.

The BBA team comprised Venus Lam, Cathy Lui, John Wong and Joseph Wong. The three-stage competition was held on 16 & 17 June 2015 at the Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill, aiming at facilitating study on taxation and arousing interest amongst university students.

Contestant teams received four local-community-related topics six weeks before the competition. All of the teams had to prepare viewpoints to support and to refute the proposition, as they were only informed, half an hour prior to the competition, which side of the argument they would be presenting.

“None of us had any previous debating experiences,” said Cathy. “We, therefore, were quite nervous during the competition.” Despite the lack of experience and strict time constraints, the team captured the third place amongst all the local university teams.

“We believe that it is our team spirit that leads us there,” shared Cathy. “It was a valuable experience to meet and chat with people from different backgrounds.”
