101 outstanding graduates, students and faculty members of the School of Business of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) were honoured with lifetime membership of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) at the 8th Induction Ceremony of BGS Hong Kong Baptist University Chapter on 25 April 2018. Dr. William Leung Wing-cheung, SBS, JP, an experienced and well-respected banker, was awarded the Chapter Honouree for his significant contribution to fostering the financial and banking industry, as well as the tertiary education sector and the community at large in Hong Kong.

Prof. Ed Snape, Dean of HKBU School of Business, welcomed guests by highlighting the School of Business’s commitment to creating a better business environment through responsible business engagement, and to equipping students with the requisite skills for a successful business career. “Being one of the 580+ BGS chapters around the globe, HKBU School of Business is proud to provide our students with such a valuable opportunity to connect with top business graduates and business leaders worldwide.”

Dr. Leung can be considered a pioneer of financial technology. Even before the term “fintech” was coined, Dr. Leung had revolutionised and improved the credit card loyalty programme he managed, which earned him his nickname as the “King of Credit Card”. In 2014, his media friends called him the “Father of Digital Cheques” for his invention of a new type of bank cheque that is secured by e-certs and can be transferred by email. “I do not live with unresolved problems. When I see one, I will try to fix it. I believe that if I can solve a problem with a smart solution, which my competitors cannot think of, I have an edge over my competitors and therefore will have a new opportunity my competitors do not have. Young people should never be afraid of problems because they can be the causes of some good innovations.”

Dr. Leung is an alumnus of HKBU and is currently chairing the HKBU School of Business Advisory Committee. Renowned for his empathic management philosophy, Dr. Leung took good care of his staff in bad times and demanded his staff to take good care of customer assets. He shared with students his management motto, which he believes will guide them to fly high in their future career. “Treating people with fairness, honesty and empathy is the golden rule for developing long and lasting mutually beneficial relationships. It not only works well in dealings with staff but equally well with customers. This being what I have personally experienced in real life coincidentally is in congruence with the School of Business’ vision of “nurturing ethical leaders with global vision”.

Dr. Frederick Yim, Chapter Advisor of BGS HKBU Chapter and Associate Professor of Department of Marketing, emphasised the conviction shared by Dr. Leung and the HKBU School of Business – business ethics, corporate governance and corporate social responsibility are the future of business. “Dr. Leung has been a personification of responsible business engagement and innovations, while our School is dedicated to inspiring business practice, creating value for stakeholders, and enhancing social and economic growth and development through quality business education and research in specific strategic areas including business ethics and corporate sustainability.”

Established in 1913, Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) is the international honour society serving business programmes accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), with chapters in 190 regions and countries and members of more than 830,000 around the globe. Members and chapters of BGS are committed to upholding the founding principles and values of the Society: honour and integrity, pursuit of wisdom, earnestness and service.
