LIST OF POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES Master of Philosophy (MPhil) & Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) These are rigorous, research-based postgraduate programmes leading to the MPhil and PhD degrees. These programmes emphasise research and knowledge creation. They deepen students’ understanding of the fields of study and the research methods, and prepare students to conduct independent investigations or start a career in the academic field. The School’s areas of particular expertise and research emphasis include Accountancy and Law, Economics, Finance and Decision Sciences, Management, and Marketing. Contact number: 3411 2148 Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) DBA aims to further develop the scholarly potential of senior managers, researchers and those interested in administration education, and integrate their business knowledge beyond what they learned at the master’s level. Through a combination of taught courses and rigorous research, DBA candidates learn to lead changes, make strategic decisions and enhance corporate accountability. The programme’s high level education and research platform equips graduates to conduct independent and rigorous research to address business issues, and to analyse and solve corporate problems. The graduates are “practitioner-scholars” and potential business educators. It aims to develop well-rounded executives who have the knowledge, skills and leadership ability to respond effectively to an increasingly versatile local and international business environment. The curriculum covers a diverse range of management and business disciplines. It helps students acquire business knowledge in major functional areas of management and develop the necessary personal skills to become leaders within their organizations. The curriculum balances the need for executives to acquire a global mindset, while understanding the business environment in the Mainland. Besides the formal curriculum, a series of non-classroom activities, including Business Field Studies, corporate visits, seminars, workshops and international exchange programmes, is incorporated into the Programme. This is a 2-year Part-time programme, being offered in Hong Kong (in English) and several Mainland locations (in China). Contact number: 3411 5357 Master of Science in Business Management (MScBM) The programme specifically serves the needs of fresh graduates, who desire to prepare themselves for a business career, and those with little post graduation working experience. It is designed to equip students with the understanding in general business and management. It also prepares them in the application and integration of business knowledge and the acquisition of professional skills. The entire curriculum, supplemented by non-credit bearing seminars, workshops series and "live learning" activities, equips students with hands-on experience and widens their international exposure. This is a 1-year Full-time programme. In the future, 2-year Part-time study mode will be considered. Contact number: 3411 5357 Master of Science in Applied Accounting & Finance (MScAAF) This is the only programme in Hong Kong that integrates applied knowledge and skills in accounting and finance to train professionals who will be at home in both fields. The programme emphasises real, practical international cases. Students will acquire an in-depth understanding of and updated knowledge in both accounting and finance. This makes the programme suitable not only for accounting and finance professionals, but also for managers and executives in other business areas. Revolutions in information technology, globalisation and the rising economic power of the emerging economies, especially China, have triggered drastic changes in the world economy. Understanding the economic mechanism of these changes is helpful for making the right decisions for businesses, public organisations as well as individuals. Business executives as well as BBA students will also benefit from this programme, which gives a broader view of the economy to supplement their professional training. Contact number: 3411 2151 Master of Science in Corporate Governance and Directorship (MScCGD) This programme is designed to equip business leaders, and especially corporate directors, with theoretical tools and the latest knowledge to strengthen corporate governance in their organisations. The programme prepares graduates to become executive or non-executive directors, CFOs, CEOs, board secretaries, fund managers, risk managers, internal auditors, regulators or market intermediaries. It is also suitable for professionals interested in exploring corporate governance as an intellectual endeavour. Contact number: 3411 5281 Master of Science in Global Marketing Management (MScGMM) The programme is a joint award to be offered by the Department of Marketing, HKBU and the Marketing Division of the Management School, University of Sheffield on a full-time study basis. It is designed for relatively recent graduates in any discipline with an interest in working in the marketing function for multinational organisations. Its objectives are to equip students with the substantive and operational knowledge as well as the skills and competencies needed to function as a global marketing practitioner. More importantly, by having students spend one semester in the UK and one semester in Hong Kong, the programme utilises the synergies of having two partnering institutions located in different regions of the world – bringing global exposure to students. Contact number: 3411 5712 Master of Science in Strategic Human Resources Management (MScSHRM) Our executive-level MScSHRM programme aims to develop a strategic Asia-Pacific focus within the context of globalisation. It is a two-year programme made up of courses revolving around three core elements: strategies, globalisation and ethics. The programme is specially designed for executives with a minimum of five years management or professional work experience. It provides senior executives with advanced management knowledge as well as practical HR skills to help transform them into a strategic partner and business leader. It will also benefit practicing HR professionals who have little or no formal HRM training or education, as well as line managers who seek an advanced education in the principles and practice of people management. It will also benefit those working in other non-accounting areas, who seek a thorough education in the principles and practice of accounting. The programme emphasises substantive and operational knowledge as well as the skills and competencies for an accounting professional/practitioner. The diploma is accredited by Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants as a suitable preparation for admission to a Certified Public Accountant Qualification Programme.
