On 22nd October 2024, the Entrepreneurship Innovation Centre (EIC) at the HKBU School of Business hosted an inspiring seminar as part of its Entrepreneurship Seminar Series for the 2024-25 academic year. Mr. Shane SMITH, a pivotal figure behind the growth of Pitchflix, addressed an audience of 220 business students, sharing his journey from exploring financial markets to entrepreneurial success.

Mr. SMITH's story began in the 1990s when he first ventured into financial markets, quickly turning innovative strategies into successful sales. However, his path wasn’t without challenges; the 2008 financial crisis forced him to rethink his approach. By 2010, he refocused his efforts on promoting global business through research and communication. This pivot led to the launch of interactive shows that connected entrepreneurs with potential funders, ultimately leading to the discovery and expansion of Pitchflix—a venture started by two Cambridge students.

During the seminar, Mr. SMITH emphasised the essence of the entrepreneurial mindset. “It’s about learning actively, working diligently, and seizing opportunities,” he explained. He encouraged students to draw inspiration from diverse industries, to creatively solve problems, and to view failure as a steppingstone to success. “If you take a chance and fail, it’s a learning experience. But if you don’t try, you will regret it,” he said with conviction. “Even if you fail 100 times, stand up for the 101st time.”

Mr. SMITH also highlighted the importance of self-learning, analytical thinking, and effective communication. “Communicate with people around you and make things happen with their help,” he advised.

The seminar was moderated by Dr. Marta DOWEЈKO, Director of the EIC, who expressed gratitude to Mr. SMITH for his thought-provoking insights and significant contributions to the business community.

Established in September 2016, EIC supports the School’s entrepreneurial education through seminars, workshops, and related activities. For more information about the Centre, please visit: https://eic.hkbu.edu.hk/.
