HKBU School of Business Hosts Google General Manager for Seminar on Entrepreneurial Mindset and AI Utilisation

The Entrepreneurship Innovation Centre (EIC) of the HKBU School of Business hosted the third seminar under its “Kickstarting Your Career Series” Scheme on 25th March, 2024. The seminar featured Mr. Michael YUE, General Manager, Google Hong Kong, as the speaker, with Dr. Marta DOWEJKO, Director of the EIC, as the moderator. The seminar drew a crowd of around 150 business students gathered to learn about the influence of entrepreneurial mindsets on career development, Google’s future plans for artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and to receive advice from Mr. YUE for navigating the rapidly changing business landscape.

Mr. YUE shared his unexpected journey to Google as an accounting graduate. He attributed his success largely to maintaining a “thirst for knowledge” and “flexibility”, which he believes are the key elements of an entrepreneurial mindset. These traits have not only resonated with him but also enabled him to feel at ease in diverse corporate environments, from Canada to Singapore and Hong Kong. In his advice to students, he expressed, “Everything starts with questions; if you train your brain to ask questions, you will have a passion to do things in a better way and add value. As a leader, it is crucial to foster a flexible environment where trying and failing is taken as a process to learning and progress.”

Regarding Google’s future plans on AI utilisation, Mr. YUE underscored the transformative impact of AI in enhancing productivity and efficiency. He also pointed out its promising applications in sectors such as medicine and healthcare. Furthermore, he highlighted Google’s on-going collaborations with the Hong Kong Government, the Science Park, and Cyberport, aimed at fostering innovation and sustainable development.

As the seminar drew to a close, Mr. YUE provided valuable guidance to students gearing up to step into the professional world. He emphasised the importance of thorough preparation for job and internship interviews, the enhancement of public speaking skills through coursework and dedicated practice, and the acquisition of knowledge in AI technology.
