The Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Chapter at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) unfurled its red carpet for the 14th time on 9th April, 2024, celebrating the exceptional academic accomplishments of its new members. The event honoured the academic prowess and dedication of 110 outstanding students and graduates from the School of Business, who were bestowed with the prestigious lifetime membership of BGS.

Under the warm and inspiring welcome of Prof. Yuk-Shing CHENG, Interim Dean of HKBU School of Business, the event unfolded with an air of pride and celebration. “As one of the 600 global BGS chambers, we are excited to provide our elite students with an opportunity to connect with business leaders from around the world. A BGS membership is the pinnacle of achievement for a business school student, a distinction reserved for the top 10%.”

Jennifer TAN, the Chief Executive of Alipay Financial Services (HK) Limited, and the Executive Vice President, Strategy Development and Government Affairs, GBA of Ant Group, was awarded as Chapter Honouree in recognition of her excellent managerial leadership. In the realm of professional success, Ms. TAN is not just a player, but a game-changer. With over two decades of senior management roles under her belt, she is a highly respected accounting professional and Fintech leader. Ms. TAN was the recipient of the Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award, and was also recognised by the Fintech Magazine as one of Fintech’s Top 100 Leaders globally. Her contributions to the ACCA have been significant, serving as the Chairlady of ACCA Hong Kong for 2021/22 and being elected as the ACCA Global Council Member for 2022-2025. Beyond her professional triumphs, she is a catalyst in youth development, contributing to various university advisory committees, including the Advisory Committee on Graduate Employment at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Upon receiving this honour, Ms. TAN graciously expressed her gratitude and delved into talking about the intricate dance of AI’s potential and pitfalls. She painted a vivid picture of AI as a transformative force, capable of reshaping industries and daily life. Yet, she also mentioned its possible downsides, such as job displacements and ethical dilemmas. She urged students to steer AI away from biases and towards societal benefits. In her words, “AI can elevate our lives by eliminating mundane tasks and boosting productivity, but we must also address concerns about job security, privacy, and ethical implications of AI decisions.” Reflecting on Alipay Hong Kong’s impressive reach of over 5 million users, Ms. TAN credits their success to relentless persistence and the magic of turning innovative ideas into reality. Her motto, “With persistency, nothing is impossible,” encouraged all to adopt a growth mindset and lifelong learning in the AI-driven era.

Dr. Frederick YIM, Chapter Advisor of BGS HKBU Chapter and Associate Professor in the Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems, acknowledged students' exceptional academic achievements. He emphasised that a BGS membership is not just a badge of honour, but a passport to a world of opportunities, a wider social circle, and a broader perspective. He said, “It is your key to a global network of professionals.” He also shared the triad of BGS principles, expressing his hope that these values would guide members in their future endeavours.
