The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre (EIC) of the HKBU School of Business co-organised the University’s inaugural BeUnicorn Day on 26 September 2025, which also marked the official launch of Inno Nexus, a new platform supporting HKBU’s start-up community.

A key highlight of the event was the “Inno Nexus Student Rising Star Showcase: From Ideas to Impact”, co-organised by the EIC, Career Centre and Centre for Innovative Service-learning. The session was initiated by Dr. Marta DOWEJKO, Director of EIC and featured student entrepreneurs sharing their journeys from concept to venture. Prof. Howard LING, Associate Director of EIC, moderated two segments: a sharing by Mr. Daniel CHAN, Paralympic medalist and founder of Kompass Limited, and a fireside chat with student start-up founders; including Ms. Jenny CHOW, Champion of the School of Business Dean’s Cup Business Innovation Gymnasium (BIG) 10.0 and Mr. Aron CHEUNG, 1st runner-up of BIG10.0. The session also featured a Radical Startup Debate with industry experts and student participants.  With a group of highly profiled guest speakers includingMr. Anson BAILEY (KPMG), Ms. Karena BELIN (WHub), Mr. Raymond CHU (HKSTP) and Ms. Liz MCKENZIE (Angelflow), the debate was a huge success that was very much enjoyed by the audience at the same time.

Inno Nexus is a collaborative initiative involving the EIC, Knowledge Transfer Office, Alumni Affairs Office, Career Centre, Institute for Innovation, Translation and Policy Research, and Centre for Innovative Service-Learning. It provides structured support for start-ups through mentorship, training, and industry engagement.

BeUnicorn Day featured over 25 start-ups across sectors including biotechnology, AI, sustainability, and social enterprise. The programme included investment pitching, networking, and the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with nine companies to strengthen strategic partnerships. The launch was officiated by Ms. Lillian CHEONG, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, and Mr. Paul POON, Deputy Chairman of the HKBU Council and the Court.

The event highlighted the School’s active role in fostering an entrepreneurial ecosystem and supporting students in turning innovative ideas into impactful ventures.
