On 23 August 2025, the HKBU School of Business officially welcomed the new cohort of the Master of Science in Business Management‘s (MScBM) programme through a vibrant opening ceremony on campus. Comprising over 100 talented students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, the cohort is set to embark on a transformative educational journey.

Setting a tone of aspiration and unity, the ceremony began with a meaningful tradition: the Wish Tree. Students were invited to write down their personal and professional goals for the wish tree, symbolising the rooting of their dreams within the programme.

The ceremony was graced by the programme’s leadership team, including Prof. Monique Shui-ki WAN, Associate Dean (Taught Postgraduate Studies) and MBA and MScBM Programme Director; Prof. Frederick YIM, MScBM Associate Director; and Dr. Archimedes David GUERRA, Lecturer and course instructor for Corporate Finance and Governance, Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance.

In the opening address, Prof. Monique WAN introduced the university motto, “Faith and Perseverance”, encouraging the new students to embrace challenges with resilience and determination. She emphasised HKBU’s commitment to “Whole Person Education”, encouraging the cohort to cultivate robust communication skills, a proactive self-learning attitude, creative problem-solving abilities, and uphold integrity in all their pursuits—qualities that define a true business leader.

Prof. Frederick YIM then provided an insightful overview of the key pillars of MScBM curriculum, spanning the Strategic Executive Development series, the hands-on MScBM Capstone Project, and the immersive Business Field Study. These components are meticulously designed to bridge theory with practice and prepare students for executive leadership.

A highlight of the event was an engaging sharing session with two distinguished MScBM alumni who have forged successful careers. Alumna Paula Marie LUBRICH, now an Account Manager at Monx Team, recounted how the programme’s rigorous curriculum and dynamic environment enriched her professional development and unlocked opportunities in Hong Kong’s competitive business landscape. Followed by that, Alumna Xinyi Yanice CHEN, an Auditor at Shinewing (HK) CPA Limited, offered practical advice on time management and maximising the learning experience, sharing how the MScBM programme was instrumental in paving her way to a rewarding career in the city.

The afternoon was dedicated to “Reach for the Sky”, an immersive team-building workshop. In a high-stakes simulation, student groups were tasked with launching a new airline to compete for a major contract. By assuming different corporate roles and tackling real-world business challenges, students immediately put their collaboration, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills to a test.

The opening ceremony successfully set a motivating and collaborative tone for the year ahead. As the new cohort begins the study journey, students are entrusted to exert societal impact as future leaders. Their dreams, now rooted in the HKBU School of Business community, will grow with every challenge and achievement, turning aspirations into reality.
