In an inspiring service-learning initiative, over 40 Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students from the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) School of Business have collaborated with our partnering NGO, Ronald McDonald House Charities Hong Kong (RMHC), and X Social Group to present the ARTOPIA Charity Drone Show in January 2026. This unique event aims to support and uplift children from RMHC, while illustrating the positive impact of social innovation on their lives.

The ARTOPIA event is a remarkable fusion of business education, service learning, and Artech—demonstrating how technology can be harnessed for social good. Students enrolled in the BUSI3035 Service Learning and Community Engagement course have worked together with RMHC children, transforming the creative visions found in the children’s drawings into a spectacular drone performance, set against the stunning backdrop of Victoria Harbour.

This collaborative effort not only highlights students’ commitment to community engagement through service learning but also provides a valuable opportunity for them to apply their business knowledge in a real-world context. In October 2025, approximately 50 HKBU students coming from transdisciplinary programmes, including business administration, communications, and music, visited RMHC. During their visit, they utilised early-child communication and project management skills learnt in class to connect with the children, listen to their stories, and guide them in expressing their emotions through art.

As part of their preparations for ARTOPIA, students engaged in co-creation sessions to explore innovative ways to blend creativity with technology, with technical support from X Social Group. This project exemplifies how business education can extend beyond the classroom, fostering a culture of social innovation.

The drone show provides a platform to celebrate not just the artistic talents of RMHC children but also the dedication of HKBU students who have invested their time and energy into this initiative. The event is a testament to the School of Business’s commitment to providing diverse learning experiences. By collaborating with various organisations and incorporating service-learning elements into the business undergraduate curriculum, we encourage our students to leverage interdisciplinary knowledge to contribute back to society.

With service learning, innovation and compassion at the forefront, we can light up lives and inspire positive change together.
