HKBU School of Business co-organises competition to nurture understanding of sustainable economic development11 Jul, 2023
As part of the School’s efforts in cultivating future-ready business leaders, the CSDS co-hosted the Challenge aiming to introduce and deepen students’ understanding of sustainable economic development, on top of developing their data literacy and enhancing their ability to read and use economic infographic.
To facilitate key stakeholders with relevant knowledge of building a sustainable community, Dr. Aries Wong, Associate Director of the CSDS, introduced the concept of sustainable economic development to the secondary school students in Economics in a one-hour video and to the secondary school teachers in Economics in a three-hour seminar. 3,500 secondary school students participated in the first phase of the Challenge after watching the video, and 95 teams of students from 47 secondary schools in Hong Kong submitted their infographic posters to compete in the second phase.
Six teams were selected for an in-person presentation and Q&A session at HKBU in front of the panel of judges, comprising Prof. Charles Kwong, Dean of School of Arts and Social Sciences, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), Dr. Vinci Chow, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Economics, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and Dr. Aries Wong. Two teams from Hong Kong University Graduate Association College scooped the Champion and first runner-up prizes with their entries titled “Powering Towards a Greener Tomorrow, with Electric Vehicles to Follow!” and “Sustainability of Food Production” respectively, and a team from TWGHs Chen Zao Men College won the second runner-up with their “Shortage of Public Healthcare Services in Hong Kong” project. The Champion team also won the Sustainable Economic Development Theme Award for their outstanding demonstration of thought-through sustainable economic ideas and data presentations.
The CSDS, established in July 2022, aims to conduct research and organise knowledge transfer activities related to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). It focuses on how institutions, policies and practices affect the achievement of the selected SDGs in global and local contexts. It also facilitates the organisation of education activities related to sustainable development in collaboration with community partners. Visit the CSDS website for more details.
