img A team of three BBA students captured third place in the regional 2019 Budding Value Investor Award. The final round of the competition took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 13 April 2019. The HKBU team competed against five finalist teams from other universities, and was the only team from Hong Kong that made it to the top three.

The team comprises Tommy Deng (BBA Finance, Year 3), Andy Li (BBA Applied Economics, Year 4) and Abbas Khan (BBA Finance, Year 3). The competition began with 73 teams from 27 universities across 7 countries, and required each contesting team to play the role as a fund manager and to conduct an analysis of a chosen stock owned by Capital Dynamics, a Malaysia-based investment firm. The winning HKBU team conducted an equity research report on Padini – a fast-fashion market leader in Malaysia, and was selected as one of the six teams to compete in the final round. The judging panel was impressed by the team’s initiative to conduct a site visit to one of the Padini’s branches to collect primary feedback from customers and staff to enrich their analysis.

The winner was the Monash University Malaysia team (Stocks R Us team) and the first runner-up went to the University of Malaya team. The other finalist teams were from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Monash University Malaysia and the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.
