HKBU confers degree of Doctor of Business Administration on Dr. William Fung

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) will confer the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa, on Dr. William Fung Kwok-lun for his significant achievements in the business field and remarkable contributions to the society. The conferment will take place on 13 November. Including Dr. Fung, five distinguished individuals will receive such honour this year. 

Dr. William Fung is the Deputy Chairman of the Fung Group of companies, Group Chairman of Li & Fung Limited and Chairman of Global Brands Group Holding Limited. An outstanding entrepreneur, Dr. Fung successfully transformed the traditional export trading company founded by his grandfather into a multinational group with diverse business interests, including trading, logistics, distribution and retailing. The Company was first listed in Hong Kong in 1973, privatised in 1989 and relisted in 1992. The Company now boasts over 25,000 employees operating in over 50 countries worldwide.  

Over the years, Dr. Fung has held key positions in major trade and business associations. He was formerly the chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Hong Kong Exporters’ Association and the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation Council.

For his outstanding entrepreneurship, Dr Fung was named one of the world’s Top 25 Managers in 1995 and 50 stars of Asia in 2000 by Business Week. Together with his brother Dr Victor Fung, he was named “Businessman of the Year for 2005” by Forbes Magazine, and the brothers were also honoured as one of Time Magazine’s “60 Years of Asian Heroes”. Dr. Fung was conferred the Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa, by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Dr. Fung supports many charity initiatives through his family foundations and has made significant donations to HKBU for the establishment of the Fung Hon Chu Endowed Chair of Humanics, the Fung Scholarships, and the Fung Service Leadership Initiative which help nurture young talents.
