Six MBA students teamed up to compete in the 19th Xuanzang Road Business School Gobi Challenge, held from 1st to 4th October 2024. This marked the School’s first-ever team entry in this renowned event. Demonstrating exceptional strength and resilience, all team members successfully completed the race, earning the “Shackleton Award”, which recognises teams with the highest percentage of members completing the challenge.

This year’s race attracted 5,833 participants from 119 institutions. Starting from Gobi Qingquan in the Gansu Province, the race followed the ancient route of Xuanzang, a Chinese Buddhist monk of the Tang Dynasty, who journeyed westward to India over 1,300 years ago. Over four days and three nights, participants braved harsh natural conditions and traversed 121 kilometres of the vast Gobi Desert, testing both their physical and mental endurance.

Despite battling injuries, the team leader, GUO Binfeng, clinched three “gold label awards”. Teammate YU Anqi showcased her exceptional athletic talent, securing two “bronze label awards”. Team members LAI Yinyin and QI Jiafeng also excelled, each earning a “bronze label award” while providing strong support to the team. Their perseverance placed the team ninth in the medal rankings. Undeterred by physical challenges, all team members remained determined to win the Shackleton Award, never giving up even as other teams withdrew.

The Xuanzang Road Business School Gobi Challenge is an event that combines rigorous physical and mental challenges. It is designed to push participants from top business schools to their utmost potential, fostering resilience, teamwork, and a deep sense of accomplishment.
