The HKBU School of Business recently welcomed Prof. Crispin COOMBS, a Professor of Information Systems from Loughborough University, United Kingdom, for a week-long visit from 13th – 17th January. Prof. COOMBS, renowned for his expertise in research impact, led a dynamic workshop on 15th January titled “Crafting Impact Cases Workshop”, aimed at helping researchers maximise the impact of their work. The workshop was moderated by Prof. Xu HUANG, Associate Dean (Research & Impact).
During the workshop, Prof. COOMBS, who served on the UK’s Business and Management Panel in REF 2021, guided the School’s faculty members through the intricacies of crafting compelling and effective impact case studies. He emphasised the importance of clear, high-magnitude, and well-evidenced articulations. Participants were encouraged to critique example impact cases from REF 2021, identifying common strengths and capturing valuable lessons for crafting their own impact case studies.
The workshop also shed light on the upcoming RAE 2026 Assessment criteria, particularly focusing on the elements of “reach” and “significance”. Prof. COOMBS shared practical tips on framing impact case studies, such as concentrating on one major impact with supporting satellite impacts or addressing a central theme through multiple projects.
In small group discussions, participants, including the Dean, Prof. Han ZHANG, shared perspectives, critiqued each other's ideas, and collaboratively developed strategies for crafting impactful case studies. These discussions were not only fruitful but also fostered a sense of community and shared learning among the attendees.
Throughout his visit, Prof. COOMBS provided valuable advice to the School and its researchers on preparing impact cases. He reviewed and offered feedback on draft case studies and impact statements, helping to enhance quality and effectiveness.
